Nursebeware: NurseBots?

Honda's ASIMO, an example of a humanoid robotImage via Wikipedia
I was going to write an article on how robots are becoming increasingly popular in the hospital for assisting the health care professionals.  As I peruse all the articles on these robotic entity I became increasingly annoyed at the reference to these robots as “Robot Nurse”, “Nurse bots and “Nursing aid robots”.

[medgadget] Nurse Robots by 2010?
British scientists and engineers want to replace nurses with 'nurse bots' that will be able to function independently or alongside 'robo-surgeons'.

Pearl flirts with old men. But women like her too. Her wide eyes and smiling lips lend her face an expression that hovers between vacuous gaiety and humble servility. But don’t let the vacant look fool you. Pearl is one sharp cookie.

Nurse Beware: Malpractice Insurance

It just amazes me when I talk to other nurses and discover that they do not carry any malpractice insurance.  Many nurses believe wrongly that when working for a facility that they are covered under the company's malpractice insurance policies.  I would immediately explain the process of the "company's" malpractice insurance coverage.

Any nursing professional can be sued!  I do not want to scare you.  I want to make you aware that you need to have your own malpractice insurance.  It does not matter if you competent nurse or retired.  If you hold a license you still can be sued.  Here are some of the things you can be sued for:
You can make a mistake, maybe not intentionally but it happens.
Someone claims you made an error in your charting and/or reporting.
A doctor claims you misunderstood his orders.
A patient or relative claims you are negligent.
Someone you are supervising makes a mistake.  (This is a good one since you are not the one that hired them)
You stop and help someone with an injury.
You give advice in any health matter.
The doctor or the facility being sued can turn around and sue you.

In the process of going to court, the jury can look at your participation in the matter.  In so doing, the jury can find you negligent in their eyes.  You can be held criminally responsible. Did I make it clear enough for you.  My intent is to make sure you go into the nursing profession with your eyes open.  The more you know, the better able you will be to act within the law and protect yourself against potential suits.

So Beware, get your own malpractice insurance.

Nursing Care Plans

NURSING CARE PLANS

Regarded as a waste of time for most nurses but without a specific ‘document‘” a delineating the “Plan of Care“, important issues are likely to be neglected.  Care planning provides a guide for all who are involved with a patient/resident's care.  It is a comprehensive and intensive look at the patient/resident's status, active and possible problems to reach an expected goal.

Video Calls for Loved ones in Senior Living Setting

I was talking to my brother in law today and we were talking about nursing homes and seniors in general. The thought occurred to that we could start a business providing video contact via PC to PC between a senior and their loved ones. We would provide the computer and set up an appointment to start the visit.
Just think of the ability to see and talk to your loved ones in their environment, during a special activity birthdays, holidays or just to check in on them.

Have not posted in such a long time

Blogging Readiness
Have not posted in such a long time.
I was busy with my family, gardening, canning and visiting. Actually, I just got tired of posting and trying to set up a blog site. My ultimate goal is to learn to make money from “blogging”, not much just enough to pay the cost this adventure.  I an not particularly an “expert” on anything.  I do have an occupation that I can make a good salary per hour but you know at my age I really don’t want to. What I really want to do is to have “job” “career” that is flexible in time and place. A position that lets me stay at home (wherever that is), be comfortable dressed with my coffee beside me

Why Nurses are leaving the Profession.

Why Nurses are leaving the Profession.

As an RN for over 30 years with experience in both hospitals and nursing homes; I know first hand the frustrations that nurses of all levels face.

The main complaints of nurses are long hours due to inadequate staffing.  They are unable to pass medications, do their treatments and "finish" charting in a timely manner, due in part to inadequate staffing.

 Zemanta
Image representing Zemanta as depicted in Crun...I am testing how "Zemanta" works. I just added it and now it sits on the side next to this create a blog on blogger.com. I have been researching "paid surveys" for the past 3 days. I signed up on multiple paid surveys site and have been deleting all the trash it sent to my email account. I am glad I am retired so I have a lot of time to go through all the "trash". I should have made a "throw away" email account, I read somewhere that I could have done it on "yahoo". I also have been trying to add google's analytics tracking service to see how my blog is doing.

Men as Nurses

 Men as Nurses

Whoever said retirement was fun. Just returned from moving my daughter from an apartment (that is another story) with no air condition to a 2-story duplex in Tallahassee, Fl. Who goes to Florida in June? HOT, HUMID and BUGS everywhere. While relaxing over a cold drink my daughter introduced me to a young man who wanted to be a nurse. We talked about what nurses do and some of the challenges he faces going into a female dominated field. In spite of aggressive recruitment of males into the nursing field, males make up only about six to seven percent of the nursing populations.

So you want to be a nurse? Beware!
We have hopeImage by Barack Obama via Flickr

Are you willing to put in the years of education and sacrifice that is required to study to be a nurse? Do your spouse and family understand the amount of support that will be required of them in order for you to keep up with your studies?
